BlueZoo component architecture
BlueZoo’s architecture is delivered as a collection of scalable components, both sensors and software
BlueZoo provides a unified solution for audience measurement. The solution begins with small hardware sensors that listen for Wi-Fi probes spontaneously emitted by all mobile phones. Our sensors encrypt and compress these probes, dozens or thousands at a time, and forward them to our analytics servers in the cloud.
BlueZoo Applications Programming Interfaces (APIs) enable both BlueZoo components and third-party applications to access and visualize the BlueZoo data. Data are accessible in real time and from BlueZoo’s data warehouse maintained in Google BigQuery. The primary end-user-facing applications delivered by BlueZoo are web dashboards, mobile applications, and email-delivered reports. The following sections describe each of these components in more detail.
BlueZoo cloud servers analyze the data to generate metrics including impressions (visits), occupancy (visitors), dwell time, the number of unique visitors and unique visitor recurrence, and other advanced metrics. BlueZoo cloud services deliver analytics in real time and populate BlueZoo’s data warehouse with fine grain analytics that are retained indefinitely. BlueZoo’s cloud infrastructure scales with the number of sensors deployed.
How BlueZoo works
- Smartphones send Wi-Fi probes to search for Wi-Fi access points and BLE advertisements to announce themselves. BlueZoo sensors (hardware or software-only) passively listen for these signals.
- Sensors bundle these signals and forward them to the BlueZoo Cloud every 30 seconds.
- BlueZoo Cloud unpacks and analyzes the signals, responds to real time requests for analytics, and populates the BlueZoo data warehouse.
- BlueZoo Cloud also sends alerts (e.g. occupancy over limit) and delivers analytics to web browsers and via email.
“Digital Out of Home audience trading is now borderless, and omnichannel campaigns increasingly represent a significant portion of our revenue growth. We are delighted to partner with BlueZoo to expand our audience measurement and ensure our customers are getting 100% of promised impressions.”

Component details
Following is a brief description of the different components. Click on the component name to see pages dedicated to each item.
BlueZoo sensors are available as either applications on third-party hardware (e.g. BrightSign media players, Bluefin screens) or as tiny hardware devices, designed to our specifications, and manufactured by our supply chain partners. Sensors are available either with internal antennas or two RP-SMA connectors for external antennas. Sensors support backhaul to the internet via ethernet, Wi-Fi, or via a USB-connected cellular modem.
The BlueZoo Dashboard is used to manage sensors and to visualize audience measurement analytics. From a single interface, Administrative Users and Installer Users can monitor sensor connectivity, organize sensor locations, adjust sensor calibration, and manage users. From the same interface, Analytics Users can visualize analytics including impressions, occupancy, dwell time, unique visitors, and traffic flow, as well as define reports to be sent periodically via email.
BlueZoo mobile applications are available on iOS and Android smartphones. Our mobile apps are used chiefly to deploy and calibrate BlueZoo hardware sensors, and to collect ground truth for auditing of BlueZoo analytics. Installers of BlueZoo sensors use the mobile app to name and calibrate newly-installed sensors. Ground truth collectors use the mobile app, alone or in teams, to collect ground truth data for calibration and auditing.
BlueZoo customers use the dashboard to define customized reports that are delivered by email, making it easy to share insights with your team and customers who do not themselves have dashboard credentials. Create branded reports for the analytics, sensors, and time periods that matter most, then schedule them for delivery once, or automate delivery on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. All the visualizations available in the dashboard can be included in BlueZoo reports.
BlueZoo and third-party applications communicate with BlueZoo cloud servers via BlueZoo’s RESTful APIs. These APIs control user authentication, enforce access control privileges, and deliver data from BlueZoo’s cloud servers. BlueZoo customers commonly integrate BlueZoo API calls into custom applications. We also provide support for webhooks to support a “push” architecture.
